Biking Burgundy vineyards and its fascinating heritage

Burgundy is a concentrate of history that you must take the time to explore, according to its castles, churches, abbeys, villages with glazed tiles and its famous vineyard: Chablis, Côtes de Beaune, Côtes de Nuits…During this Burgundy Bike Tour you will be crossing Burgundy vineyards and villages. Auxerre, Beaune, Dijon, have kept their splendour and elegance, while Avallon, Semur-en-auxois and Châteauneuf are the very image we have of Burgundy, a postcard.

On the borders of the Morvan, Vézelay and its basilica is a World Heritage Site and marks the start of one of the roads to Santiago de Compostela. But what is most fascinating about Burgundy is of course its incredible vineyard! The Climates (terroirs) of the Burgundy vineyard were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2015. The registration is a recognition of the unique character of the Côte Viticole between Dijon and Beaune.

A land that includes some of the greatest wines in the world: Vougeot, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin, Pommard, Meursault and many others.

    BIKe itinerary

    Welcome to Burgundy

We will meet you at Auxerre train station at 2 pm before taking you to your hotel in Chablis. We take advantage of this first day to adjust our bikes, discuss the stay and explore Chablis, a village known throughout the world for its dry white wines. The Chardonnay grape variety is expressed in Chablis like nowhere else.

    CHABLIS LOOP

We leave Chablis and its picturesque alleys in the direction of Auxerre. The ride will take us through the hills, vineyards and first Burgundy village of your week: Chitry, Saint-Bris-le-Vineux. Discreet, Auxerre is a beautiful surprise, set on the banks of the Yonne river, you will appreciate its narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses, its abbey, its cathedral…
We continue through the Burgundy countryside before reaching Chablis again for a tasting of local wine.

    Chablis > Vezelay

From Auxerre, the Nivernais canal with its hills showing some of the most beautiful villages in Burgundy: Irancy, Cravan, Mailly le Château, Châtel Censoir will take us to Vézelay.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, perched on a rocky spur crowned by a medieval basilica, this village is a major pilgrimage site and a starting point for Santiago de Compostela (Saint James way).
In the 12th century, Bernard de Clairvaux (a Burgundian monk) called for the second crusade in Vézelay. Harboring the relics of Saint Madeleine, the village became a major spiritual landmark.

    Avallon > Semur-en-auxois

We leave Avallon perched on a granite spur and surrounded by towers and ramparts following the cousin’s valley and its green hue. After a stopover in the picturesque village of Montreal, we will continue our journey in the town of Epoisses, known for its cheese. Finally, Semur-en-Auxois, a medieval city set on a pink granite cliff, will mark the end of this day in the heart of the Burgundy countryside. Sheltered by its ramparts, there is an intertwining of paved alleys and a few half-timbered houses, dominated by the large towers of the keep and the tapered spire of the collegiate church of Notre-Dame.

    Chateauneuf > Beaune

It is along the Burgundy Canal that we will make our first pedal strokes towards Châteauneuf and its imposing 12th century fortified castle. Classified among the most beautiful villages of France, its medieval streets reveal the houses of the rich Burgundian merchants of the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and offer a splendid panorama. We will then continue to Beaune and its famous vineyard.

    beaune LOOP

From Beaune, you will follow small wine roads in the heart of the Côte de Beaune vineyards. Between hillsides and valleys you will cross the villages of Pommard, Volnay, or Meursault.
The city of Beaune owes its reputation to its wines, and under the streets of the city is a labyrinth of cellars dating back several centuries, where some of the most prestigious wines in the world are kept. The Hôtel-Dieu, also known as the Hospices de Beaune, founded in the 15th century, is one of the most famous charity hospitals in the world, as much for its sumptuous and remarkable traditional Burgundian architecture (glazed tiles) as for its prestigious wine estate, whose production has historically been auctioned off to finance its operation, under the name of the sale of the Hospices de Beaune.

    Beaune > DIJON

We ride towards Dijon, crossing villages known worldwide for their vineyards: Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée, Gevrey-Chambertin… If Château du Clos de Vougeot no longer produces wine today, its visit is essential, it remains the symbol of nearly a millennium of Burgundy history.

With its compact and pedestrian-friendly centre, lively street scene and aesthetically pleasing ensemble of half-timbered houses and polychrome tile roofs, Dijon is one of France‘s most appealing cities. Filled with elegant medieval and Renaissance buildings that hark back to the city’s 14th- and 15th-century heyday as the capital of the Duchy of Burgundy.
