To the conquest of the Izoard
Today you take part of the road that the Tour will take during stage 18 (Embrun – Valloire). Departure from the town of Guillestre to reach the Gorges du Guil which will lead us to the most severe slopes of the Col d’Izoard (16km at 6.8%). Shortly before the summit, entering the “Casse Déserte”, this remarkable mineral landscape is made up of a vast area of scree where rocky peaks emerge.
Within this lunar landscape is erected a stele in memory of Fausto Coppi (1919-1960) and Louison Bobet (1925-1983), in homage to their exploits on the slopes of the mythical Col d’Izoard, on the Tour de France but also on the Giro.
After taking in the view, the road will lead you to Briançon and then to your hotel for a well-deserved rest.
On July 14th 1926 during the 14th stage of the Tour de France between Nice and Briançon
The yellow jersey Lucien Buysse will experience a real ordeal. After breaking his brakes, it is by braking with his feet that he will descend the Izoard. He ends the stage by leaving the soles of his shoes on the descent.
