 EXPLORE THE ALENTEJO & THE DOURO VALLEY

What a diversity of landscapes and heritage during this cycling trip in Portugal ! Our odyssey takes us through 2000 years of history, culture and gastronomy. It begins in the Alentejo where towns and villages (Evora, Monsaraz) sparkling with whiteness appear amidst plains of olive trees and cork oaks gilded by the ground. In the evening, it is very pleasant to observe the stars since Alentejo has one of the most beautiful skies in Europe. We will spend the last days of the trip biking the Douro Valley. “Portugal’s golden river”, the Douro flows through the northern region of the country amidst thousands of hectares of vineyards that produce the famous Porto.

Day 1 : Welcome to Alentejo

We will meet you at Lisbon Airport at a predetermined time before transferring you to your hotel in Evora. We take advantage of this first day discuss the stay and explore the center of the capital of the Alentejo, declared World Heritage by UNESCO, which has been surrounded by walls since Roman times.

Today’s bike ride takes us towards the sympathic village of Arroilos in the golden plains of the Alentejo.

Route: Option 1 : 45 km / 420 m Elevation Gain –  Option 2 :  65 km / 500 m Elevation Gain

Accomodation: Convento do Espinheiro 5* – Evora

Today’s bike ride takes us towards the medieval village of Monsaraz, a few kilometers away from the Spanish border. The village maintains the magic from ancient times like few others in the world. A lot of magnificent stories could be told about its courageous kings and Templars. Suspended in time, it is one of the oldest village in Portugal and one of the best in Europe for stargazing.

Route: Option 1 : 60 km / 500 m Elevation Gain – Option 2: 80 km / 600 m Elevation Gain

Accomodation: Sao Lourenço do Barrocal 5* – Corval

This morning we drive towards the picturesque village of Pinhao in the magnificent Douro Valley, The village is surrounded by slopes streaked with terraces covered with vines among which emerge properties (quintas), a perfect place for a Port wine tasting. The bike ride to Tabuaço, along panoramic routes offer a not very steep climb through terrace vineyards over the Douro Valley.

Route: 40 km / 700 m Elevation Gain

Accomodation: The Vintage House 5* – Pinhao

What a spectacular ride we have today ! This short but quite challenging loop is amazing. We will get over the mountain that leads us to Sabrosa, a remote village lost on the other side of the Douro Valley. But no worries, we will be rewarded for our hard work, since a long and scenic downhill will bring us back to Pinhao.

Route: 55 km / 1100 m Elevation Gain

Accomodation: The Vintage House 5* – Pinhao

This morning we go deeper into the Douro Valley, exploring remote and quite challening twisting roads with gorgeous panoramas. We go through peaceful villages. It’s Portugal at its best.
