Biking CORSICA from North to south

Not quite France and not Italy either, a bike tour in Corsica is a unique biking experience between mountain, sea and cultural particularities.

Get ready to be amazed by the breathtaking cliffs plunging into the Mediterranean, its golden beaches and high mountains, the villages hung on the side of the cliffs, riding the gorges carved in stone, the hills lined with chestnut and olive trees: Corsica is well and truly an “island of beauty” and a cycling paradise.

Further south, amazing granite sculptures overlook the Gulf of Porto: these are the Calanche de Piana, with its formidable chaotic decor. You will not get tired of the spectacle of the landscapes until the southern end of the island, where Bonifacio seems to be standing in balance on high cliffs of white limestone.

Welcome to Corsica

We welcome you at Bastia airport at 2 pm and drive you at your ideally located hotel in the charming fishermen village of Erbalunga.

After a bike fitting and a tour oriention, we will enjoy the beauty of the Corsican coast. This small marine aligns its old houses on a green schist peninsula topped by an old Genoese tower that is half ruined. Enjoy the pleasure of strolling around the port in the narrow stairways, shaded by plane trees, laurels and palm trees, and in the flowered squares.

Erbalunga to Saint-Florent (VIA CAP Corse)

Today, for your first ride in Corsica, you will start from Erbalunga on a very beautiful hilly road along the coast that will take you around Cap Corseto Saint-Florent.

A beautifully traced route between the sea and the mountains allows you to discover sandy or pebble beaches, steep villages with their ancient terraced crops, and navies nestled in the embankments of the coast.

At the hollow of a very beautiful gulf to which it has given its name, St-Florent is built on a slight height north of the mouth of the Aliso river. Stroll through the old town through winding alleys lined with old houses and flower-filled oleander plots.

Saint-Florent to Calvi (VIA The Balagne)

Balagne contemplates the Mediterranean from its balcony of fertile hills and its coastline with its sandy bays. Beautiful villages dot the landscapes of this pleasant region, a land of coconut trees, orchards, vineyards and olive trees. Beyond the first reliefs, Balagne becomes wild and unknown, and offers unforgettable panoramas.

Proudly set on its bright harbour in a setting of often snow-covered mountains, Calvi is one of the most beautiful marine sites on the island.

.

Calvi to Piana (via Porto)

This morning we ride towards Piana along hilly and then rolling mountainous seaside panoramic roads. Flying over the Mediterranean, we then reach beautiful Porto and Calanche de Piana where we will stay for 2 nights. Dominating the Gulf of Porto, there are astonishing granite sculptures formed by erosion. From this chaotic landscape emerges a strange and unique beauty. The intense blue of the sea, the often unreal light that bathes the coast, the palette of oranges and roses of granite and the vigorous relief make it an exceptional site.

Day off in Piana

Today is our first day off and to rcover from our first rides let’s enjoy a private and spectacular boat trip in Gulf of Porto and Calanche of Piana ! This is the type of experience you’ll remember for a long time ! We will also enjoy this day spending time in the village of Piana, which is classified as one of France’s most beautiful villages and relaxing at our comfy hotel with stunning views !

Piana to Corte (via Santa Regina gorges)

Starting from the sea side, we then ride inland for the first mountain stage with the passage through Spelunca gorges towards the Col de Vergio at 1478 m. Once at the top, we ride downhill through Scala di Santa Regina gorges. which are one of the most famous and wildest on the island. The road, cut in places in the rock face, dominates the gorges. The arid and tormented landscape offers a grandiose physiognomy.

Corte played a fundamental historical role and remains today the Corsican capital of heart. You will love to linger in the old town with its steep, cobbled streets dominated by the citadel.

Corte to quenza (via col de  sorba)

Today’s stage is the most challenging of our cycling trip in Corsica. Indeed, it will be essentially mountainous. We will go south and ride series of beautiful and remote cols: Sorba (1311 m), Verde (1289 m), Vacchia (1193 m).

We stay overnight in Quenza, at the footsteps of the famous Aiguilles de Bavella.

Quenza to Palombaggia beach (via Porto-Vecchio)

After the Col de Bavella, we will ride through the enchanting forest of l’Ospedale before reaching the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio.To the north and south, peninsulas and small bays are home to sumptuous beaches fringed with pine forests, such as the famous Palombaggia where we finish our ride and enjoy a well diserved bath in one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches.

We then take the van to our hotel ideally located near Bonifacio, the pearl of Corsica. We stay there for two nights, meaning that tomorrow is a day off to explore Bonifacio and its wonderful surroundings.

Day off in bonifacio

The southernmostvillage on the island, built on an exceptional site, Bonifacio is a must see place, Enclosed in its fortifications, the old town, perched on a narrow and high limestone promontory shaped by the sea and the wind, dominates a 1,500 m long estuary at the bottom of which a marine flowers. Once a safe haven for warships, the port now offers its anchorage to leisure boats. We’ll have a splendid walk down to the sea throughout the cliff tanks to the unusual Aragon King’s stairs.
