BIKe itinerary

Welcome to the Loire Valley

We will meet you at Saint-Pierre-des-Corps TGV, near Tours, at 2 pm before taking you to your hotel in Fontevraud-L’Abbaye. We take advantage of this first day to adjust your bikes, discuss the stay and explore the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. It is one of the largest monastic cities inherited from the Middle Ages. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1840, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, as the entire Loire Valley.

Loop around Fontevraud-l’abbaye (VIA Saumur)

From Fontevraud, we bike the banks of the Loire Valley and then continue our journey to Saumur, where its castle overlooks the Loire, built in the 10th century.
In the Saumur region, wine lovers can take a trip underground, the subsoil has many cellars. After a wine tasting we head towards the troglodytic village of Turquant before concluding this day at the Abbey of Fontevraud.  Here lies Eleanor of Aquitaine, her husband Henry II Plantagenet and their son Richard the Lionheart. For a long time Royal Abbey, the building became in the 19th century one of the hardest prisons in France.

Fontevraud to Azay-le-Rideau (VIA Chinon)

Today, we will first head to Chinon. Its royal fortress and ramparts dominate the city. The first meeting between Joan of Arc and Charles VII took place within its walls. Then we continue towards Rigny-Ussé castle. It is only natural that you should find it similar in appearance to Sleeping Beauty, since it inspired Charles Perrault. Finally, we will continue towards Azay-le-Rideau, which Balzac called this Château “a faceted diamond set by the Indre river “. It expresses all the elegance of the French Renaissance !

Azay-le-Rideau to Tours (via Villandry)

The Loire Valley is at the origin of the “French way of life”. Under the impetus of François I, King of France, who pursued a cultural policy whose ambition was to rival Italian supremacy, the Loire Valley was enriched during the Renaissance by many castles. The Castle of Villandry is the last of the great Loire castles built in the region during the Renaissance. You will discover its famous “French-style” gardens.

We then take the Cher river bank towards Savonnières and then Tours, a lively and gourmet town where you will spend the night. A city of Art and History, we will discover its cathedral and its old half-timbered houses place Plumereau.

Tours to Amboise (via Chenonceau)

Today, the emblematic Château de Chenonceau will be the focus of our attention. The imprint of extraordinary women is everywhere at Château de Chenonceau. A landmark of the Renaissance, it is distinguished not only by its unique architecture, but also by its exceptional collection of paintings by the great masters. After visiting the castle, we will end the day in Amboise, the city where Leonardo Da Vinci is buried.

Day off in Amboise

Enjoy the historic centre of Amboise. Here Leonardo Da Vinci is everywhere: at the Royal Castle overlooking the city, at the Clos-Lucé, his last resting place 5 centuries after his arrival in Amboise… Leonardo Da Vinci settled (in 1516) at the request of Francis I, King of France. Here he will be “free to dream, to think and to work”. At Château du Clos-Lucé, his house, stroll through its gardens or in its workshops where he has created so much. Close your eyes, the soul of the genius is still there.
We will also have a boat cruise on the Loire today, a very pleasant moment.

Amboise to Cellettes (via ChAUMONT & Cheverny)

We leave Amboise by its heights to reach Chaumont-sur-Loire. More than a Renaissance castle, the Château de Chaumont is the annual theatre of the International Garden Festival. We will continue our journey towards Cheverny and its castle, inhabited by the same family for more than 6 centuries! Hergé, the famous comic book author, was inspired by it for “Les Aventures de Tintin ».

Loop around cellettes (via ChAMBORD & Blois)

Chambord is an exceptional work of art, emblem of the French Renaissance throughout the world. It is a radically unique work, one of the jewels of the heritage of humanity. Its vocation is symbolic, aesthetic and spiritual. An affirmation of royal power but also an evocation of an ideal city, the monument remains an enigma that has not finished revealing all its secrets.

Finally, we will discover Blois and its royal castle, the former residence of the kings of France. Its old town and its charming alleys will conclude a week rich in French history!

It is unfortunately already time to say goodbye. We will take you back to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps TGV Station after breakfast to end this Loire Valley bike tour, unless you want to extend your stay with Veymont Travel.
