Biking Portugal: Alentejo, Nazaré and douro valley

What a surprising diversity in this Portugal bike tour ! After a pick up and a first day in Lisbon, our bike odyssey starts in the Alentejo, a magnificent wheat land since Roman times. In this plain empty of men, cities and villages sparkling with whiteness appear as many oases, such as Evora, one of the most beautiful Portuguese cities. For a long time, the Alentejo was the main route of penetration for the Castilian invader, which explains the castle dominating almost every locality, as in the fortified village of Monsaraz.

Then we will discover Nazaré and its region. Nazaré has recently gained popularity for being the spot where the highest wave in the world has ever been surfed. Not far from there, inland, we will visit several major sites that have been of crucial importance in the history of Portugal, such as Obidos, Alcobaça, and Batahla.

We will spend the last days of the trip biking the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches along the river of the same name from the Spanish border to the city of Porto. “Portugal’s golden river”, the Douro flows through the northern region of the country amidst thousands of hectares of vineyards that produce the famous Porto. We will bike and explore the Douro vineyards without forgetting to taste Port in one of the many quintas in the valley.

BIKe itinerary

Welcome to Portugal

We will meet you at Lisbon Airport at 2 pm before taking you to your hotel. We take advantage of this first day discuss the stay and explore the city center of Lisbon and the Alfama neighbourghood. It will seduce you with its Moorish alleys, cut with arches, and its houses of a bright whiteness with flowered terraces, openwork balconies and paved patios.

Loop around Evora (via Arroilos)

This morning we take the van to Evora, the capital of the Alentejo, declared World Heritage by UNESCO, which has been surrounded by walls since Roman times. After adjusting our bikes, our easy ride leads us to the pretty town of Arroilos, before heading back to Evora on routes bordered with olive and cork trees. Arroilos is a beautiful village, perched on a hill in the great plain of the Alentejo, which is known for its carpets. At the foot of the 14th century castle, the streets are lined with houses with white facades enhanced by the blue of the door and window frames.

Evora to Monsaraz

Today’s bike ride takes us towards the medieval village of Monsaraz, a few kilometers away from the Spanish border. The village maintains the magic from ancient times like few others in the world. A lot of magnificent stories could be told about its courageous kings and Templars Suspended in time, it is one of the oldest village in Portugal. BEfore returning to our hotel, we enjoy an Alentejo wine tasting !

Day off in Sintra

Today is our day off. We will leave Evora in the morning and drive to Sintra to visit the Palacio Nacional da Pena. Rising from a thick, wooded peak, often shrouded in a swirling mist, the Palácio Nacional da Pena is a strange compilation of onion-shaped domes, Moorish keyhole-shaped doors, twisting stone snakes and crenellated towers in pink and lemon colour. It is considered the greatest expression of 19th century Romanticism in Portugal.

We’ll set up in the afternoon in our remote and comfy hotel between Nazaré and Alcobaça, offering distant views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Loop around Nazaré (via Batahla)

Starting from the hotel, we have a loop ride firstly through lovely eucalyptus tree fields in the direction of Batahla. The Unesco Monastery of the Dominicans of Batalha was built to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese over the Castilians at the battle of Aljubarrota in 1385.

Heading then towards the Atlantic coast, we will ride through remote villages have plenty of time to visit Nazaré picturesque fishing village the most renowned surfing spot in the world. It is here that the biggest wave in the world (24 m) was surfed in 2017.

Douro Valley Loop (via Favaios)

This morning we drive towards the picturesque village of Pinhao in the magnificent Douro Valley, The village is surrounded by slopes streaked with terraces covered with vines among which emerge properties (quintas), a perfect place for a Port wine tasting.

What a spectacular ride we have today ! This short but quite challenging loop is amazing. We will get over the mountain that leads us to Favaios, a remote village lost on the other side of the Douro Valley. But no worries, we will be rewarded for our hard work, since a long and scenic downhill will bring us back to Pinhao.

Douro Valley Loop (via Tabuaço)

The bike ride to Tabuaço, along panoramic routes such as N222 and N323 offer a long but not very steep climb through terrace vineyards over the Douro Valley. The ride is definitely worth it. There are many excellent photo opportunities here, specially on the way down towards the Douro.

Day off in Porto

This morning you can we drive to Porto, Famous for the wines to which it has given its name. Under the sun, the city appears radiant and colourful, and it is on foot that we walk through it to discover all its charms.
