Biking Holidays IN Portugal: Alentejo, Nazaré, TOMAR and THE douro valley

What a diversity of landscapes and heritage during this cycling trip! Our odyssey takes us through 2000 years of history, culture and gastronomy. It begins in the Alentejo, where numerous cromlechs and remains of the Roman Empire give this sparsely populated region such a special atmosphere. Towns and villages (Evora, Monsaraz, Estremoz) sparkling with whiteness appear amidst plains of olive trees and cork oaks gilded by the ground. In the evening, it is very pleasant to observe the stars since Alentejo has one of the most beautiful skies in Europe.

Inland, we discover Tomar, where the Knights Templars build the famous Covento do Cristo and Batahla, where stands an impressive Monastery of crucial importance in the history of Portugal. We then explore the Atlantic Coast, its immense beaches and the charming fishermen village of Nazaré.

We will spend the last days of the trip biking the Douro Valley. “Portugal’s golden river”, the Douro flows through the northern region of the country amidst thousands of hectares of vineyards that produce the famous Porto.

Welcome to Portugal

We will meet you at Lisbon Airport at 2 pm before taking you to your hotel in Evora. We take advantage of this first day discuss the stay and explore the center of the capital of the Alentejo, declared World Heritage by UNESCO, which has been surrounded by walls since Roman times.

Evora to Monsaraz

Today’s bike ride takes us towards the medieval village of Monsaraz, a few kilometers away from the Spanish border. The village maintains the magic from ancient times like few others in the world. A lot of magnificent stories could be told about its courageous kings and Templars. Suspended in time, it is one of the oldest village in Portugal and one of the best in Europe for stargazing.

Monsaraz to Estremoz

A stage on the fringes of the modern world awaits us today. It will lead us to Estremoz, a peaceful and attractive town. Surrounded by Vauban fortifications and dominated by its castle, it is an unmissable place in Alentejo.

CONSTANCIA to TOMAR

We leave the Alentejo today for central Portugal and the region of Tomar, a former stronghold of the Order of the Knights Templar. The latter made the city the headquarters of their congregation. The Convent of Christ, which dominates the city, is one of the most emblematic monuments of Portuguese history and even of the Western World. Our dinner, always with a Templar theme, will be an extraordinary experience.

BATAHLA to Nazaré

The Monastery of Batalha, classified by Unesco, was built to commemorate the Portuguese victory over the Castilians in 1385. From here we start our ride which  through remote villages and eucalyptus forests to the Silver Coast on the Atlantic. We take the time to discover the fishing village of Nazaré. It is the most famous surf spot in the world since it is here that the biggest wave in the world (24 m) was surfed in 2017.

Douro Valley Loop (via Tabuaço)

This morning we drive towards the picturesque village of Pinhao in the magnificent Douro Valley, The village is surrounded by slopes streaked with terraces covered with vines among which emerge properties (quintas), a perfect place for a Port wine tasting. The bike ride to Tabuaço, along panoramic routes such as N222 and N323 offer a long but not very steep climb through terrace vineyards over the Douro Valley. The ride is definitely worth it. There are many excellent photo opportunities here, specially on the way down towards the Douro.

Douro Valley Loop (via Favaios)

What a spectacular ride we have today ! This short but quite challenging loop is amazing. We will get over the mountain that leads us to Favaios, a remote village lost on the other side of the Douro Valley. But no worries, we will be rewarded for our hard work, since a long and scenic downhill will bring us back to Pinhao.

TIME TO SAY GOODBYE
