Biking the Loire Valley from fontevraud to chambord

With their chimneys, turrets and bell towers, the castles of the Loire Valley seem straight out of fairy tales! Get on your bike and travel back in time along the royal river ! These jewels of art history bring to life the memory of the kings, princes and great families who commissioned and inhabited them, but also that of the artists and craftsmen who built and embellished them. Chambord and its “magic” staircase, Chenonceau and its gallery spanning the waters, Azay and its delicate reflection, Villandry and its sumptuous gardens punctuate, with many others, the banks of the river. Do not forget in your visit the cities of art and history huddled at their feet, as well as the residences evoking the memory of illustrious artists: Rabelais, Leonardo da Vinci, Balzac… But the Loire Valley is also world-famous vineyards, one of France’s best eating regions, troglodyte villages and immense forests! The inscription of the “Loire Valley” in the UNESCO World Heritage List has rewarded the richness of   the cultural landscapes of this territory.
The castles of the region, as well as the villages and vineyards surrounding them, reveal a rich history.
Kings and Queens came to settle here in the past, giving birth to a true art of living, “the French style ».

DAY 1 - Arrival in Fontevraud

We will meet you at Saint-Pierre-Corps TGV at 2 pm  before taking you to your hotel in Fontevraud-L’Abbaye. We take advantage of this first day to adjust our bikes, discuss the stay and explore the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. Located on the borders of the three provinces of Poitou, Anjou and Touraine, it is one of the largest monastic cities inherited from the Middle Ages. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1840, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000, as the entire Loire Valley. In a green valley a few kilometres from the Loire, near Saumur, Fontevraud is an essential stopover. Here lies Eleanor of Aquitaine, her husband Henry II Plantagenet and their son Richard the Lionheart. For a long time Royal Abbey, the building became in the 19th century one of the hardest prisons in France.

Royal fortress, sumptuous palace, governors’ residence, prison, weapons and ammunition depot, museum: what a destiny! We cross the historical heart of Saumur before reaching the castle and its panoramic view of the Loire.
Heir to a prestigious military past and an ancestral equestrian culture, the “Cadre Noir” continues its mission of training elite riders. The National Riding School alone embodies the French tradition of horseback riding.
In the Saumur region, wine lovers can take a trip underground, the subsoil has many cellars. An underground life dedicated to the greatest vintages has developed: several renowned houses – Gratien & Meyer, Veuve Amiot, Maison Ackerman… A wine tasting then we head towards the banks of the Loire and the troglodytic village of Turquant before concluding this day at the Abbey of Fontevraud.

Today, the emblematic Château de Chenonceau will be the focus of our attention. The first built the bridge over the Cher river and the second added the two splendid galleries. Two centuries later, it was still a woman, Madame Dupin, who saved him from the torments of the French Revolution. The imprint of these extraordinary women is everywhere at Château de Chenonceau. A landmark of the Renaissance, it is distinguished not only by its unique architecture, but also by its exceptional collection of paintings by the great masters.
